Introduction
The main bottleneck of today¡¦s networks is in their access segment. To address that bottleneck, this project is focused on fiber broadband access. MARIN has been launched in 2005 to investigate a powerful set of technologies for fiber access and MANs. MARIN stands for Metro and Access Rings Integrated Network, and makes use of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) ring technology to addyahress the current and future limitations of both access networks and MANs. MARIN has the following innovative features:
- WDM ring technology integrating MAN and access networks and providing Tb/s MAN capacity;
- Highly scalability with respect to the number of users and data rates;
- Smooth transition from legacy networks to future networks;
- Compatibility with both electronic and optical routing for high speed and low latency;
- High-speed routing based on Optical Burst Switching (OBS) to avoid delays;
- Compatibility with routing employing wavelength conversion;
- Novel parametric optoelectronic components recently developed by my group.
My MARIN research program will investigate in depth the feasibility of the proposed MARIN architecture. We will perform investigations in the areas of access networks, MAN, and OBS with wavelength conversion, which will become more integrated in the future. The research will culminate in a testbed incorporating all features necessary to test the performance of the MARIN architecture, and demonstrate its benefits.
